In keeping with the International School of Boston's mission in which "...daily achievement is measured not only by test scores, but also by a student's emergent capacity to meaningfully relate to other citizens of the world," we are organizing our second annual "Community Service Day" for all Middle School students on Thursday, May 11, 2017.

In the morning, the students will go out to the community to provide a variety of services. When they return to school in the afternoon, there will be activities and a presentation to celebrate their work. This year we have partnered with the following organizations:

The students will need to bring a bagged lunch, water bottle and a snack. They should also wear long pants (no shorts), their ISB t-shirt and closed toed shoes. Some of the groups will be working outdoors so should remember to dress for the weather -wear a hat, rain jacket, sunscreen and bug spray. Since they will be working hard, it might be a good idea to bring a change of clothes. Finally, as with all school activities please do not bring valuables or phones.

We would like to congratulate our students who had outstanding results on the Concours Kangourou, a math contest taken by students in French schools around the world. Students do not prepare for this ahead of time and have to apply their math knowledge and critical thinking skills to solve challenging math problems. We are very pleased with our students' results, and would like, in particular, to congratulate those who ranked in the top 1% worldwide, as well as their math teachers.

MLF Rewards the 5th Graders for their project ''Les voix silencieuses''

This past winter, the two fifth grade classes took part in the project "C'est ton droit" organized by the Mission Laïque Française (MLF). Every year, one of the articles of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child (ICRC) is honored and this year it was Article 28: ''The Right to Go to School.''

In class, students worked on this theme in history, geography, moral and civic education, and also in French class. They then created sketches with Karine Scialom, their theater teacher, who served as a support for the script of the film created by Karine and the students. The video shooting was done by Catherine de Palma, Upper School teacher in French literature.

This project was the result of real teamwork and close collaboration between several teachers from different divisions. Besides raising awareness of the evolution of children's rights throughout the world, our students were also introduced to filming techniques and specific vocabulary.

The financial award received from the MLF will be donated to the ARCK-Boston Association, which promotes the integration of the arts into underserved schools and colleges in Boston. Some of our students have also chosen to commit to helping children around the world.

Of course, our young students and their teachers do not intend to stop here, and are already working on a project on a theme that is close to their hearts: bullying in school...

In one month, the Class of 2017 will conclude their student careers at ISB when they receive their school diplomas at graduation. In a school that by its very nature has a transient population, it is noteworthy that six members of the graduating class actually started here Maternelle.

Éva Sénéchal entered in Petite Section/Pre-K and was just three years old when she started at ISB. That means that she spent 15 years at our School! Félicie Jungels also started in Pre-K, left our School for a few years, and chose to come back. Ramsey Harrison, Emma Hubert and Sophie Lee all started in Moyenne Section/Mid-K and Kevin Elkhoury came along in Grande Section/Kindergarten. And except for one student, the group have all been here straight through. They are what American schools often affectionately term "lifers."

For the second year in a row, we asked each of them if they had any particular reflections to share as they look back on their experience. Please click here to read their full comments and have a look at the individual photos of these seniors holding photos of their younger selves.

To these six, and to the whole Class of 2017, we extend our best wishes for their last days at ISB, for their graduation ceremony, and for all their future endeavors!

    Testimonials:

Through my long years at ISB, I received daily opportunities that I would have never gotten at other schools such as learning different perspectives on events in the world, and experiencing bits of culture from other countries as I interact with everyone around me. It is an experience like no other and one I will miss as I move on to college. Kevin Elkhoury

There's no doubt ISB had a huge influence on who I am today. It's very rare to be taught by a group of teachers all determined to shape students into responsible and successful citizens. ISB's mission is ultimately to create curious and open-minded individuals, who are taught how to think and analyze. Whether you attend ISB for a year, or for your entire education, you will end up a better person, more ready to begin your life's journey. Ramsey Harrison

I started off delicate and passive, drudged through the challenges and losses and became fierce and unstoppable. Emma Hubert

I started my education at the Maternelle at ISB, and although I have moved and discovered other schools during middle school, I came back to ISB as I knew I would get the well-rounded education I needed to make my mark in this world. In tumultuous times such as these, I am incredibly grateful to be bilingual and bicultural, and to have received an education that has allowed me to be more open-minded and understanding of what is happening around the world! I have also aquired amazing friendships with people from all different backgrounds and have met teachers that have genuinely changed my life! Félicie Jungels

Educating yourself about the world is more important than memorizing facts. Sophie Lee

During the many years I have spent at ISB I have made friends from all over the world I know I will keep for life. When I graduate I know that wherever I do go I will always have someone I can count on not too far from me. Living in this open and diverse environment has taught me to be open-minded and accepting of the world around me, and how to celebrate the differences that make us unique as well as recognize the similarities that bring us together. I hope to take on the many challenges in life with the determination, motivation and dedication that my years of ISB have taught me. Éva Sénéchal

    Rock Climbing in Maternelle!

I've been a rock climber for 10 years and I've coached climbing to people of all ages for the past 4 years. I love working with children, and it has been an amazing opportunity working with the kids at Maternelle. They are attentive and very well behaved!

Over the past few weeks, we have taken our rock climbing out of the school and onto real rock. This is a very difficult transition for many people because real rock can be very intimidating. The children did a great job of being brave and climbing, even though many of them were scared. They showed the ability to reason, even when in a stressful situation. I'm very proud of them and look forward to what they will be able to accomplish in life with their ability to confront their fears!

In January, all ISB German students in Upper School took the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) Exam, which was administered on three levels.

The National German exam was delivered in electronic format, which allowed for the inclusion of video and audio clips as source material.

The exam is comprised of 100 questions. Question types include multiple choice, matching, and true/false. There are two parts of the exam. The listening and viewing portion is 40 minutes in length and consists of a series of short audio and video segments with a total of 50 questions and tasks. The reading portion is 45 minutes in length and consists of a number of printed texts, including graphs and images, with a total of 50 questions and tasks. All materials used in the exam are from authentic resources.

Approximately 21,000 students from about 700 schools nationwide participated in the program this year. Of the 25 ISB students who took the exam, seven scored in the 90th percentile! The students are Noémie Cerrina, Luna Damiani, Tino Damiani, Tiernan Leschner, Julian Marmier, Agathe Martel, and Aliénor Rice.

ISB Theater students participate in the MA Young Playwrights' Project

The International School of Boston's Theater Company has, over the past few months, been participating in the Massachusetts Young Playwrights' Project (MYPP). MYPP, an organization supported by the Boston University Center for the Humanities, brings playwright mentors into high schools across the Boston Metro Area. Over two class visits, students receive a crash course in the writing of a 10-minute play. Students then write (and rewrite) their plays, receiving feedback from their playwright mentor, theater teacher, and classmates.

The culmination of this process is the New Noises Festival in April, when all the participating schools along with professional actors and directors from the Boston theater community come together over the span of four days to present selected student works.

It is an extraordinary opportunity for those students whose plays are selected to work with professional actors and directors, who rehearse and perform their plays, script in hand. For other participants, the day includes workshops with professional theater artists as well as the opportunity to see and discuss the work of their peers.

Three ISB Juniors had their plays selected, including Jack Mei, Alborz Seyyedi, and Ismaeel AlAlawi. Jack and Alborz received staged presentations of their works and Ismaeel had what is called a "cold reading" by professional actors.

Ismaeel's and Jack's reflection on the day:

Attending the Massachusetts Young Playwrights Festival was truly an unprecedented opportunity for us high school students. As we landed our feet on the Boston University theater's grounds, we all stood in amazement. The room was painted in solid black, with a stage on the far right, and headlights reflecting blue transverse waves on the smooth wooden stage's surface. We gently sat on the chairs, and calmly rejoiced as one play after the other was presented. We had a great time, and you wouldn't believe it, but our astonishment grew to be proportional to the number of plays acted. Entertainment, information, guidance, dedication, creativity, expertise, opportunity, pleasure... All the words that could come to mind after having the great opportunity of watching our own plays being performed by professional actors. Yes, our plays! Although it was wonderful, it didn't last for long. We left the theater grounds with masks of sorrow at 4:00 pm. Yes, we wanted more. We wanted more of this magical, wonderful experience that sparked our curiosity and passion for scriptwriting. We thank our teacher for offering us the chance to participate in the Massachusetts Young Playwrights Festival and look forward to next year's festival. (Ismaeel)

The Young Playwrights' Festival at Boston University was an amazing experience for me. The play I wrote was directed by a professional theater director and acted out by professional actors. I was amazed by how the director and the actors creatively turned my special effects-demanding play to one that was doable on stage, while keeping the message of my play and its element of mystery and spookiness - which were really important to me. I learned a lot from the director through his creativity, adaptability, and ingenuity, as well as from the actors' commitment, skillfulness, and genuineness. It was a very worthwhile experience for me. (Jack)

    Dear ISB Community,

I have some exciting news for you! We have just received the exam results for the students enrolled in the French Program.

    • French Baccalaureate: results for the newly graduated Class of 2017

100% passed and 93.3% with honors! This year again, the results are excellent, which confirms the quality of our teaching methods and curriculum.

All of the 15 candidates were admitted to the Bac, and 93.3% with honors: 3 of them with Mention Assez Bien, 4 with Mention Bien, and 7 (46.6% of the group) with the highest distinction, a Mention Très Bien. The overall average for the class turned out to be 15.35out of 20.

Comparatively to France where 30% of the candidates obtain the General Baccalaureate (L, ES and S) with high honors (Mention Bien and Très Bien), more than 70% of our students reached this level this year. Also, 40% of all students who take the Baccalaureate in France take the General Baccalaureate; 60% take the Technical and Technological Baccalaureates.

    • French Bac épreuves anticipées: results for the eleventh graders

The scores were once again very strong. In French language and literature, the average on the written was 13.16 and on the oral, 17.32 out of 20. The average for TPE (student projects) was 16.42, while in science, which was taken only by the ES students, the average was 13.33.

    • Brevet: results for the ninth graders

Every student passed and 100% with honors! Out of 27 students, 1 had a Mention Assez Bien, 2 a Mention Bien, and 24 a Mention Très Bien.

As it happens every year, we will need to wait until early July to get the scores from the International Baccalaureate; but we can already congratulate the Class of 2017 for these great accomplishments that crown the end of their ISB careers. Congratulations go as well to all the French track students, and to their teachers, for these great accomplishments!

    Sincerely,

    Richard Ulffers

Data usage too high on your iPhone?

Staying on wifi while using your iPhone is great, but it is not always as helpful as you would think when it comes to data usage. Apple's "Wi-Fi assist" is on by default on iOS 9 and later. This service is intended to make your online session more consistent - it automatically switches to your cellular network when the wifi that you are using has erratic service (like dropouts because you are near the edge of the coverage area). Although Apple says it will not be used by background apps, turning this service off is a safer way to prevent too much data usage on your bill. Navigate to settings> Cellular > then scroll all the way to the bottom and set it to Off.

The default PC video player, Windows Media Player, is not very convenient for moving back and forth through a video on file or disk, as you must manually drag a slider and attempt to hit the correct time point. The VLC player has features that make this easy. Make sure VLC is on your computer and right click, choosing the option of opening with VLC. You can now use Ctrl-T and enter time within the second. Do not put VLC in full screen mode for this, or it will cover the Go To Time menu.
