Hillary Chute, Assistant Professor of English at the Northwestern University, visited the 11th and 12th grade OIB English classes on Monday, February 6th. Professor Chute is coeditor with Art Spiegelman of Metamaus, which explains how Maus was conceived and created. In that work, Art Spiegelman says of Hillary Chute: "In 2006, after reading her lucid takes on my work and that of others, I gave her free access to my rat's nest of files, archives, artwork, notebooks, journals, books, and dirty laundry. She soon became my chief enabler and associate editor in a project I kept resisting. It was hard to revisit Maus, the book that both 'made' me and has haunted me ever since; hard to revisit the ghosts of my family, the death-stench of history, and my own past. Her relentless enthusiasm, diligence, and intelligence allowed this project to happen." Her most recent book is Disaster Drawn; Visual Witness, Comics and Documentary Form....Her other books are Graphic Women and Disaster Drawn: Visual Witness, Comics and Documentary Form.

Official Donation of Books by the ''Bibliotheque Orange''
Last week, the Bibliothèque Orange (BO) had the pleasure to make its fourth donation of books to ISB! Richard Ulffers, Head of School and Véronique Valdettaro, Head Librarian, graciously accepted the books from Anne-Christine Rice, one of the founders of the Boston Chapter of the BO. Four years of great books are now available for everyone to borrow, and can be found in a section specially dedicated to the BO. The word is going around quickly, since several readers have already planned to borrow from our fantastic 2013-2016 selection!

The BO Boston chapter was started in 2013 by ISB parents who were hungry for literature in French. The group is currently composed of 13 avid readers, many of whom are (or have been in the past) ISB parents and/or members of Boston Accueil. This group would not have seen the light of day without the invaluable help of all and in particular:
- Sophie Beaudron (Former ISB parent, and new leader of the BO-Boston chapter)
- Rachel Bernier (Founder of the BO-Boston chapter and ISB parent and staff)
- Françoise Matte (President, Boston Accueil and former ISB parent)
- Martha Mayne (ISB Receptionist)
- Anne-Christine Rice (ISB parent and former trustee)
- Véronique Valdettaro (ISB Head Librarian)
These six ladies immediately jumped into the adventure and have been promoting this book club, which was initially started in 1922 by 24 Parisian friends who decided to share their readings. There are now 600 groups of the BO worldwide, with nearly 15,000 readers. At the end of each year, the books are always donated to a local school or association. The BO is thrilled that ISB has become such a great partner! For more information about the BO, please click here to visit the official website, or contact Sophie Beaudron.

Printemps des Poètes - Exhibit Africa, The Living Museum
(Le français se trouve ci-dessous.)
''...I have always believed art is the conscience of the human soul and that artists have the responsibility not only to show life as it is but to show life as it should be.'' Harry Bellafonte
"Regarder le monde par la fenêtre ouverte des arts." Bruno Doucey
The theme of the 2017 edition of the Printemps des Poètes "Africas" allowed the students in 9 th grade to explore the oral reativity of the African culture and its influence which is still present in multiple art forms in the 20 th and 21 st centuries. On Tuesday March 7, 2017 in the Media Center, through the creation of poems, masks, audio clips, as well as the performance of songs and dance, the students were able to show how African art in general has contributed to the discovery of new paths on every continent. With their friends and family, they shared all the various aspects of the African artistic and human richness from the tradition of "griots" (oral story tellers) in poetry and in music to the contemporary art works, inspired by poetry and techniques of the Western World.
After the presentation of the students' living museum, two Brazilian musicians, David Ramos and Anne Negah Santos evoked in an interactive concert the survival of African rhythms in the music of South America.

Winter Athletic Recap: Middle School Boys Basketball
The 2016-2017 season saw our ISB Middle School boys' basketball team finished the season on a three-game win streak. The wins were a reflection of their consistency and commitment to working hard and trying to improve individually and as a team each time they stepped on the court. Our team showed a great deal of determination, resilience, and unity from the beginning all the way through the end of the season. Lead by three 8th graders (Elliot Miller, Yakov Perlov, and Charlie Marion) the players embraced each game as an opportunity to simply compete and have fun, regardless of the challenge ahead. Congratulations to all the players for the effort and pride that they represented ISB with. We have more work ahead next season but with a good number of returning players we look forward to continued improvement and growth each day. Good luck to Elliot, Yakov, and Charlie as the move on to the upper grades.
Have a great end of the year and remember 1, 2 "ISB" 3, 4 "Terriers"!!!
Coach: Les Lartey
Winter Athletic Recap: Middle School Girls Basketball
This season, the Middle School Girls' Basketball team worked together to achieve its best record ever of four wins and six losses. The highlight was that these players overcame a great challenge that has nagged the team since its beginning 4 years ago: players finally learned to attack the basket and SCORE! As a group, the team scored over double the total number of points of any of the past seasons and eleven out of the team's total sixteen players were in the books scoring baskets. This is a huge improvement and clearly demonstrates that we have a group of confident players who have a strong desire to compete and win games. A second highlight is that this group learned how to win under pressure. We had two games that came down to the final minute and, in both instances, the Terriers played with intensity and composure, pulling out nail biter wins over rivals Fayerweather School and Belmont Day. The six eighth graders set a great tone with their work ethic and focus on the court. Ten seventh and sixth graders will return next year with a solid season of experience under their belt and, with hard work and the commitment to train off-season, they will surely see continued improvement and success on the court!

Winter Athletic Recap: Varsity Girls Basketball
The 2016-2017 Varsity girls' basketball team roster more than doubled in size with an influx of freshman that has the future looking very bright for the Lady Blue Terriers. With 10 freshmen on the roster, this was a very young but talented team given to Coach Healy this season. The girls had their first winless season but with a few lucky bounces, could have been a .500 team. They played bigger and more experienced teams and kept most games very close right down to the wire. The Lady Blue Terriers never gave up regardless of what the scoreboard said and should feel very proud of that. The girls were led by their point guard Elianor Hoffmann who ran the offense and led the team in scoring. She was an intense leader who always kept the spirits up for a young team. Other bright spots for this team were the emergence of Doriane Robasson who is what you would call a gamer. Games seem to bring out the best in her. In addition, the shooting of Iris Windsor and Kimmy Robasson helped keep the Lady Blue Terriers in games. With a glut of young, versatile players moving forward, the future is very bright for the ISB Girls Varsity Program in 2017-18 and beyond.
Coach: Steve Healey
Winter Athletic Recap: Varsity Boys Basketball
The 2016-2017 Varsity boys' basketball team had a challenging growth season this year with the addition of 8 new first season players to the roster. The team hit the ground running in November to learn what it takes to be high school players as well as the system Coach Holloway employs. With such a youth infusion, growing pains are to be expected. The Blue Terriers played a challenging schedule this season but kept fighting till the end. Sometimes the scoreboard wasn't their friend, but this season pay dividends in the years to come. We're never given anything we cannot handle and the Blue Terriers proved that this season. This young, talented roster will be a year older, stronger, and wiser when the 2017-2018 season kicks off and ready to prove that this season was nothing more than a learning curve. Some bright spots for this team were the leadership that Thomas Guichemerre provided both in practice and in games. His toughness and energy were infectious and will be sorely missed next season. In addition, the emergence of two young sharpshooters in Kasper DeBoeck and Charles Wirth, gives the Blue Terriers a lot of offense for the coming season.

Searching in Axiom
Most people already know about the search bar in Axiom. Many people, however, are not familiar with the Launchpad Quickview. This is a feature in Axiom that makes it faster to navigate to records. It is triggered by typing the name of a query in the Search Bar and then pressing the TAB key.
This allows you to run any existing query, not just the default quick search records like Students and Staff, etc. For example, you can type "Find Households," hit the TAB key, and start typing a household name without first viewing the query results grid.
Launchpad Quickview is useful when you want to see a field from a record without running a full query or going to a detail screen. For example, with Launchpad Quickview you can run the "Where Is Student Now?" query, and immediately see the "Current Location" field without typing anything else
ISB Electronics Recycling Program
ISB has an Electronics recycling program! Every year we recycle hundreds of pounds of electronics from the school and our ISB families. Since 2010 we have recycled over 10,500 pounds of electronics waste that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill. We accept computers, monitors, batteries, small household appliances, LCD TVs, cell phones and more! Things we cannot accept include larger appliances, tube TVs and monitors and anything hazardous. Contact the help desk for more information.
A Soirée With Proust!
Despite dreadful weather in the evening of Friday, March 31st, the ISB literary evening on the Proust theme was an immense success, featuring elegance, intellectual stimulation and conviviality in a glamorous setting. Monsieur Swann stopped by the candelabra-bedecked Media Center to chat with some of the guests, as well as to enjoy professional-level musical and acting performances. Teachers, parents, staff, and other members of the ISB community enjoyed a few hours together in grand style with gourmet appetizers, champagne, and bright conversation. Task Manager
If your computer shows you a spinning wheel and stops responding, you can use the Task Manager to end the program that is causing problems. Hit the key combination Ctrl+Alt+Delete and choose the Task Manager option. Now highlight the last program you were using on the list and choose End task. Repeat if necessary with other programs on the list until you regain control of the computer.
Rotating Text in Sheets
Anyone else been irritated that Google Sheets hasn't had the ability to rotate text in a spreadsheet? Those of us that used this feature in Excel for years can rejoice. Google Sheets finally has that option. Highlight the cells that contain the text you want rotated and look for the tilted A icon on the toolbar.
Walk For Hunger on Sunday, May 7th
Join us for the 2017 Walk for Hunger on Sunday, May 7th! Every year 40,000 people walk to raise funds for the Massachusetts food banks. It is a fantastic, family-friendly event and ISB has been walking as a large team since 2010. This year you can run a 5K and/or walk 20 miles. You can also walk fewer miles! Middle and Upper School students get 6 hours of community service if they do the whole thing. A not-to-be-missed event!
Click here to sign up with ISB Team
There will be a bake sale on Thursday, April 27th at 3:30pm in the Cambridge lobby to raise money for this event. In the past, the ISB team has raised $8,000 for the Walk for Hunger. We hope to beat that this year!
Also, we encourage all participants to wear an $8 yellow ISB T-shirt to better identify our team. Anne-Christine Rice, a current Upper School mother and former Trustee, will be selling the T-shirts every day from Monday, May 1st to Friday, May 5th, from 3:15pm to 4pm in the Cambridge lobby.
Please have a look at the beautiful team pictures below!

MUN Delegation at Lexington High School Conference
On Saturday, March 25th, team Model UN attended Lexington High School's regional MUN conference. Some of the issues our delegates worked on were: the stability of the South China Sea, drug trafficking and fraudulent medicine, ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, and Brexit. We participated in two historical committees: the 1955 Bandung conference and the 1989 Politburo crisis. This was our first time attending this conference, and the consensus is that we would like to return next year! Award winners were: Tino Damiani, Best Delegate; and Antoine Babu, Lucas Allam, and Alique Fisher all received Honorable Delegate awards. Congratulations to all. We'd like to offer a special thanks to Ms. Marie Olivier for accompanying us that day! Click below for beautiful photos taken by LHS.
