There are so many helpful modifications you can make to a query results grid, like changing column names, sorting, background color, locking columns, etc. You can group columns together, give subtotals and totals of different fields, highlight data that meet specified criteria, and much more!

If you decide to export your customized query, you will see your modifications (highlighting, sorting, freeze panes, etc) on the spreadsheet.

Internet security issue

Well, if you did not change your passwords as a new year's resolution last month (or even if you did) there's a new reason to take some time from your day and change some passwords that you use for online activities. Last week Google's Security Analysis Team Project Zero discovered a massive memory leak from a web service and security company called Cloudflare, which may have exposed user data from thousands of sites that use their service. They are still discovering the impact of this leakage, called Cloudbleed, and the size of it. Although there is no definitive list yet of affected sites (Cloudflare literally services thousands), now is a good time to change your passwords - it's just a good practice to get into.

Under the "On startup" heading, choose "Open a specific page or set of pages". Then click "Set pages" and choose "Use current pages".

2017 IB Results!

Dear ISB Community,

Today, students in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program received their examination results. This is the twelfth year of the IB Program at ISB. Students met the world average and surpassed the average of the United States. The top score was 40, and that score is achieved by 1% of candidates in the world.

An impressive 72% percent of our students obtained a bilingual diploma, which requires successfully passing advanced literature classes in two languages or, for second language learners of English, successfully passing an advanced literature course in their first language and all other courses in English. This year, students paired English with French and Chinese.

The following details reveal other notable achievements of our class of 2017:

Image

Since the IB grading system is quite different from either the French or the American model, it might help to explain a few points:

  • Each of the students' required six subjects receives a score from 0 -7 (42 points maximum). A grade of 7 is not easy to achieve, and both 6 and 7 are considered the equivalent of an A in the American system. This year, students received 7's in Math HL, French A, German and Russian, as well as in Physics.
  • The grades from the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) final essay (both letter grades) provide 0 – 3 additional points for a possible maximum total of 45. A "C" on the Extended Essay is considered as fulfillment of the requirements of the work. This year, grades of A in the Extended Essays were awarded in History, and Visual Arts.
  • The minimum score needed to obtain the diploma is 24. The world average score is 29. The number of IB candidates in the world who achieve a perfect score of 45 represents approximately one-third of one percent.

For an idea of the scores required by some of the most selective non-U.S.* universities:

  • Oxford University: 39
  • Imperial College: 38
  • McGill University: 33 for Faculty of Arts, 36 for Faculty of Arts & Science, and 36 for Faculty of Science

*Universities in the United States do not have specific IB score requirements but rather value the diploma as a highly challenging program in their evaluation of applicants.

Congratulations to the IB Class of 2017 and to its teachers!

Sincerely,

Richard Ulffers
Head of School

Data usage too high on your iPhone?

Staying on wifi while using your iPhone is great, but it is not always as helpful as you would think when it comes to data usage. Apple's "Wi-Fi assist" is on by default on iOS 9 and later. This service is intended to make your online session more consistent - it automatically switches to your cellular network when the wifi that you are using has erratic service (like dropouts because you are near the edge of the coverage area). Although Apple says it will not be used by background apps, turning this service off is a safer way to prevent too much data usage on your bill. Navigate to settings> Cellular > then scroll all the way to the bottom and set it to Off.

The default PC video player, Windows Media Player, is not very convenient for moving back and forth through a video on file or disk, as you must manually drag a slider and attempt to hit the correct time point. The VLC player has features that make this easy. Make sure VLC is on your computer and right click, choosing the option of opening with VLC. You can now use Ctrl-T and enter time within the second. Do not put VLC in full screen mode for this, or it will cover the Go To Time menu.

This is a premier international conference that attracts schools worldwide. ISB had a delegation of 21 students, representing several different committees and countries. The assignment for the three-day conference was to come up with feasible solutions to controversial and challenging global affairs. Dealing with the problem of North Korea's testing of nuclear missiles, cyber security in Southeast Asian nations, and the problem of conflict minerals were just a few of the topics addressed.

Team ISB was awarded three honors:

  • Honorable Mention for Tino Damiani (John Hancock/Historical Committee)
  • Honorable Mention for Lily Bresler (Serbia/Human Rights Council)
  • Honorable Mention for Olivier Brunache (Honduras/Futuristic Committee)
  • Several of our delegates participated in this conference on Friday and Saturday, before going on to compete in the State Fencing Championships on Sunday! Such dedication!

ISB has an Electronics recycling program! Every year we recycle hundreds of pounds of electronics from the school and our ISB families. Since 2010 we have recycled over 10,500 pounds of electronics waste that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill. We accept computers, monitors, batteries, small household appliances, LCD TVs, cell phones and more! Things we cannot accept include larger appliances, tube TVs and monitors and anything hazardous. Contact the help desk for more information.

We would like to congratulate our students who had outstanding results on the Concours Kangourou, a math contest taken by students in French schools around the world. Students do not prepare for this ahead of time and have to apply their math knowledge and critical thinking skills to solve challenging math problems. We are very pleased with our students' results, and would like, in particular, to congratulate those who ranked in the top 1% worldwide, as well as their math teachers.

MLF Rewards the 5th Graders for their project ''Les voix silencieuses''

This past winter, the two fifth grade classes took part in the project "C'est ton droit" organized by the Mission Laïque Française (MLF). Every year, one of the articles of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child (ICRC) is honored and this year it was Article 28: ''The Right to Go to School.''

In class, students worked on this theme in history, geography, moral and civic education, and also in French class. They then created sketches with Karine Scialom, their theater teacher, who served as a support for the script of the film created by Karine and the students. The video shooting was done by Catherine de Palma, Upper School teacher in French literature.

This project was the result of real teamwork and close collaboration between several teachers from different divisions. Besides raising awareness of the evolution of children's rights throughout the world, our students were also introduced to filming techniques and specific vocabulary.

The financial award received from the MLF will be donated to the ARCK-Boston Association, which promotes the integration of the arts into underserved schools and colleges in Boston. Some of our students have also chosen to commit to helping children around the world.

Of course, our young students and their teachers do not intend to stop here, and are already working on a project on a theme that is close to their hearts: bullying in school...
